America: A Democracy?

America is a Democratic Republic, if you were a part of the statistical percentage that didn’t know that. Many ask, “If we go around to different countries spreading Democracy, why aren’t we one ourselves?” Well, I pondered the same question, and came up with an answer of some sort.

We, the people, elect representatives (Democratic), who then make higher decisions that influence the laws of our country (Republic). If we were a straight Democracy, we would vote on every, single thing, from smoking ordinances, to property taxes. These massive polls would require quite a bit of time from the people, leaving a limited time for anything else. Such a small time frame that some say “we wouldn’t have any time to enjoy the benefits of a Democracy.”

However, since our founding fathers have already established a union that has come near satisfaction, it has few choices left for its beautification. Say we have roughly ten topics left for debate, such as abortion, the ERA, drug usage, withdrawing the troops, the death penalty, and a few others. We would vote once every two weeks or so. I think Americans could make time for a few minutes of filling in bubbles or clicking a screen twice a month. The process could even be simplified so that it could be done on a computer, if the Government could keep all the hackers out.

Educate?

Sadly, letting people vote is only half the battle. The remainder is educating the people on topics for which they are voting. As I see the number of pointless commercials that are being broadcasted on TV, I’m starting to realize that they could be easily be replaced with educational snips, letting the viewer know what’s going on in the world. We could even get rid of whole TV shows, such as all the reality nonsense that is on MTV and every other station now, and replace it educational programs (Discovery channel geek).

How does that sound to you? Does it really affect your “American life”? We’d make decsions a lot faster, instead of waiting eight years for the president to do something. If you have a better idea for if (and when) America becomes a Democracy, share it.

Dvorak Keyboard Layout

So today I decided to try somethimg new: The Dvorak keyboard layout. It’s like learning how to type all over again. These four sentences are taking me about three minutes to complete. Four, now. The funny part is that I rearranged the letters on my keybard, and the home keys are apparently built differently than the rest of them, forcing me to turn them sideways. Not to mention that the different layers have different heights, making the keyboard very umeven.

But even as I’m typing this paragraph I’m going faster!  I’ll write some more once I get going faster.

No More IE

When aslamp changed styles, I decided to drop my support of Internet Explorer all together. They get a message telling them to go to browsehappy.com, where they can download any browser except IE. They can, however, still read articles through the feeds, so they aren’t completely isolated from aslamp =].

Hexadecimal Complications in WordPress

In the past few posts that I have been writing, I kept coming accross a problem that the HTML and CSS had with the text I was entering in the posts. After disecting the content in a Hexadecimal editor (UEStudio for me), I found that instead of the normal hexadecimal charcter “20″, there was a “A0″.

A0 is a space identical to 20, but A0 doesn’t break, so when entered into the content of a WordPress (or any other software) post, it doesn’t wrap to the width of the column, and instead, just keeps on going within the same line.

To fix it, simply replace all the A0’s with 20’s in your Hexadecimal editor. If you don’t have one, and don’t want to get one, even though there are free ones, you can just copy the content to Notepad and replace all the “spaces” with the space bar, and copy it make into your online editor.

New styles: multip and aslamp

Lately I’ve been working on two new styles. The first, for my website multip.le-u.com, is the original design, using four simple squares of content. I then transfered some of the style aspects over to my new WordPress theme for aslamp, called something like “unbalanced,” or something. I haven’t quite decided yet what it is to be called.

Multip.le-u is a base site for the le-u.com webwork. There, I publically advertise the free .le-u subdomains, and list which ones have already been taken. I am hoping that this will spark a lot of creative ideas for website urls.

Aslamp’s theme is much different, but still holding the same basic desgin. The arrangement is probably the biggest thing, a right-floater that looks like it’s kinda suppose to be in the center. Let me know what you think of it, and if I should [eventually] make it public.
