America: A Democracy?

America is a Democratic Republic, if you were a part of the statistical percentage that didn’t know that. Many ask, “If we go around to different countries spreading Democracy, why aren’t we one ourselves?” Well, I pondered the same question, and came up with an answer of some sort.

We, the people, elect representatives (Democratic), who then make higher decisions that influence the laws of our country (Republic). If we were a straight Democracy, we would vote on every, single thing, from smoking ordinances, to property taxes. These massive polls would require quite a bit of time from the people, leaving a limited time for anything else. Such a small time frame that some say “we wouldn’t have any time to enjoy the benefits of a Democracy.”

However, since our founding fathers have already established a union that has come near satisfaction, it has few choices left for its beautification. Say we have roughly ten topics left for debate, such as abortion, the ERA, drug usage, withdrawing the troops, the death penalty, and a few others. We would vote once every two weeks or so. I think Americans could make time for a few minutes of filling in bubbles or clicking a screen twice a month. The process could even be simplified so that it could be done on a computer, if the Government could keep all the hackers out.

Educate?

Sadly, letting people vote is only half the battle. The remainder is educating the people on topics for which they are voting. As I see the number of pointless commercials that are being broadcasted on TV, I’m starting to realize that they could be easily be replaced with educational snips, letting the viewer know what’s going on in the world. We could even get rid of whole TV shows, such as all the reality nonsense that is on MTV and every other station now, and replace it educational programs (Discovery channel geek).

How does that sound to you? Does it really affect your “American life”? We’d make decsions a lot faster, instead of waiting eight years for the president to do something. If you have a better idea for if (and when) America becomes a Democracy, share it.
