Ubuntu 7.10 and WordPress 2.5 RC2
I put Ubuntu 7.10 (Gusty) first on my small (8GB) hardrive, mostly because I was bored and hadn’t really gotten a chance to try out linux to a full extent, but when I starting using it full time, I stuck in the portable hardrive, copied over the important stuff, then wipped my main (40GB) clean, and installed Ubuntu.
I am fully impressed and ashamed that I had never seen this before. It is amazing compared to Windows. If you’ve ever had doubts about Windows and the lack of.. well, everything you’ve ever wanted, try Ubuntu. You can burn it to a CD to boot from, and simply test it out a bit, get a feel for it, tweak with things (the normal procedure I go through when testing), and decide if it’s for you.
It does take a bit of time to figure out the basics and get things set up incase you: want to play mp3s, use nVidia drivers, or user Opera. But please, If you have any problems, let me know, and I’ll personally find a solution and try to get it working for you! I believe it is that great. The forums have been a great resource for me, and solved everything I had a problem with.
Something else that I’ve been testing out would be the new WordPress 2.5 RC2. So far, it looks amazing, especially from Matt’s video of it. Personally, in Opera, it looks kinda shifty, but I take that as my own resonsibility because I choose to use it… >.< I might have to use Firefox to update some posts here and there…. I was just using a messed up plugin… But the visual editor is still messed up in opera. =P It expands to the whole width, overlapping the right column *annoying*.
One thing I’ve noticed is that it’s a lot cleaner. Tidy and white. Less images as backgrounds and more solid colors. I like it. If you get bored with your current setup, both Windows and the old WordPress, give both of these a try! Let me know what you think of either!

Noooo, not Ubuntu. I’ve been using Linux on tinker computers on and off for over a decade but on my main machine I’ll stick to XP for now, I don’t really care about the OS, I’m just too stuck in my ways when it comes to the apps I like to get things done.
And I’m now SO tempted to try the RC2 (thanks for the link), but I’m afraid my blog will explode if I do. Too damn many plugins…

Yes, I’m starting to miss my apps a little bit, but I think I can manage. The only big thing for me is Adobe products. Frankly, I thought they were very nicely layed out, and I liked using them. But now I’m using free (legal) ones! Sacrifices =]

I’ve been using Ubuntu for the last month or so. I absolutely love it. Everything has been pretty easy to setup. Even some of the things that in the past might have been hard, were made easy by follow steps on the forums (for example, installing my video drivers by using a script off the forums. I clicked two buttons and had up to date drivers for my 8800GTS).
Take a look at Wine if there’s a Windows app you really want to run on Ubuntu. Sometimes it takes some tweaking, but you can get a lot of apps to run. I’ve even gotten plenty of games to work through it.

Yeap, that was one of first things I installed =] But I’m planning on getting a Zune (by Microsoft), and it can only really snyc with Windows. I guess I’ll have to settle for an Virtualizer or something with Wine =/

If you’re still using Ubutnu, you should install the LAMP packages and setup a sandbox-wordpress installation right on your hard drive. Very useful for playing around with your theme before you put the fixes/changes live, or for developing new themes/plugins without having to upload the files every time you make a slight change.

Yeah, I tried that for a while, in Windows even. Sadly, I’m not as active as I once was, so I’m afraid it would just use up more of my 38GB harddrive.. =P

I’m a moderately recent windows to Ubuntu convert too. After a few days of awkwardness I got use to it and now there is no need to go back. I can even use Photoshop in Wine. The only thing I am missing out on is Assasin’s Creed.
Have though about getting a MacBook, so I can have Win, Mac and Linux all run natively.
