Save Darfur?
This post is not meant to offend anyone donating to or supporting the Darfur cause, as it is a good and good-meaning program, including Femtique =].

I have seen a lot of the “Save Darfur” campaign advertisements and fund-raisers going around the web, TV, and even newspaper. Does anyone really know where Darfur is? Luckily, I did my research before posting that lone question (thanks to wikipedia), and apparently, it is in the western region of Sudan, in Africa. I’m not sure how many people know this, but: There are a lot of problems in our own country (assuming that your living in America, but if not, I’m sure your country has something that could be better?) that could easily be fixed if the population donated lots of money, just as they have for the Darfur campaign.
Public schools, for instance, could be a lot better than what they are currently. There is probably some statistic somewhere that will prove that the percent of adults that cannot read is unreasonably high, but I’m sure you can find that yourself.
I’m not saying that everyone should stop paying attention to global events, I think it’s awesome, I just wish that people would see the problems in their own country [and fix them], before attempting to fix another’s.
Matthew 7:2-5
Whatever measure you use in judging others, it will be used to measure how you are judged. And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log from your own eye; then perhaps you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.

You make a good point and the verse only adds to it. Basically the verse is saying get your act together before you try to help someone else. I’ve heard the verse before but never tried applying it to global topics… Good job.

Without a doubt, Americans need to be more grassroots in their efforts. Think globally, work locally. What’s happening in Darfur though, it’s a genocide of a people because their black. Racism is a serious problem over there… and here. Ever heard of the Jena Six? Look that one up too. That’s a local cause I’ve adopted.

What exactly is to be done about that? Releasing the condemned persons? Hardly. They should take responsibility for their action… as ignorant as they are.
I know (not personally) of someone that that happened to at his school, and surprising in Indiana. He slipped one day in the lunch room and said “Nigga” and was beaten by just about everyone (the school being mostly African-American). When he tried suing the school, the administrators replied by saying:
“Well, it was your own fault.”
There were so many students that took place in beating him that they couldn’t figure out who did what, and nothing happened legally.
Racism is a large issue, and a serious one. One that we shouldn’t still have… But people need to control their actions and deal with their problems with words, instead of with ignorance and violence.

i agree in the aspect of fixing local problems of our own before going other places. But my school as the no kid left behind program;; its useless. their are some people in this world that dont care. it has alot to do with..a certain percent of grownups who didnt want to sit down and learn when they were children. I guess i just dont even pay attention to what america does because i find that we think we are the best. their is no way to change the gov. or the peoples opp. I think we as americans are arrogant and cocky.
